It was 2084 and the gray of Australia’s Sydney metropolis was relentless. At least it was for Winston, who found himself a mere cog in the colossal, unfeeling machine of the Party.
Each day dawned not with the promise of hope but with the certainty of surveillance, a life meticulously cataloged and controlled by forces unseen yet ever-present. Winston’s abode, a stark, functional space devoid of personality, doubled as a surveillance cell. The Party’s eyes and ears, masquerading as technological marvels, monitored every uttered word, every fleeting expression.
The mandatory morning affirmations, a grotesque parody of loyalty, echoed through his apartment, their insincerity as transparent as the air he breathed, yet necessary for survival
.To survive, he had to eat, and that meant he needed eAUD; Australia’s central bank digital currency. This digital currency, an ingenious tool of control, dictated the ebb and flow of life. Each citizen’s allocation of eAUD, delivered as a universal basic income, was inextricably linked to their social credit score, a numerical representation of loyalty and conformity. Winston’s modest score confined him to life’s peripheries; a silent observer of the privileges enjoyed by the more compliant.
This social credit system, a digital reincarnation of old authoritarian practices from the East, cast a long, ominous shadow over society. The slightest deviation from the norm could send one spiraling into oblivion, ostracised and shunned. Winston had witnessed this firsthand, the sudden disappearance of once-familiar faces, now erased from existence.
The city itself, a dystopian maze with traffic barriers and CCTV cameras everywhere, enforced the ‘15-minute city’ policy under the guise of environmental concern. It was a clever ruse, a green cage that kept the populace within the Party’s grasp, their every movement a choreographed dance in the theatre of control.
Winston’s role as a data analyst for the Party, sifting through the digital detritus of human existence, was a daily exercise in despair. He scoured the data for signs of dissent, knowing full well the fate that awaited those he exposed. But if he didn’t do the job, his social credit would suffer further, leading to less eAUD, and ultimately starvation. It wasn’t like he was allowed to grow anything of his own to eat!
One evening, as Winston was contemplating all of this on his walk home — the same route home he had walked for years — he stumbled upon a small, hidden alley he had never noticed. Curiosity piqued, and he ventured in. Quite unexpectedly, Winston’s monochrome world was pierced by a ray of colour. There, hidden from the prying eyes of surveillance, he found a small garden arrayed with flowers on one side and, vegetables on the other. In the garden, there was an old woman, tending to the flowers.
Winston’s reaction was shock, and terror, as he looked frantically around for any sign of surveillance.
“You can’t be growing this here!”
The old woman looked up, and smiled. Winston felt his anxiety melt away, as the old woman motioned for him to sit by the garden.
She spoke of a time before the Party, of freedom and choice. She spoke of a resistance, a group of people who still believed in the possibility of a different world.
Winston listened, his heart pounding. Here, in this hidden garden, he found something he had not felt in years – hope.
