Australia’s Parliament has been recalled under grim circumstances. A terror attack on a Jewish Hanukkah gathering shocked the nation and demanded a response. What it didn’t demand was sloppy law-making, rushed ideology, or another exercise in political theatre dressed up as moral courage.

Yet that’s exactly what Australians were handed.
