For those who are from an international audience, Australia will head to the polls on October 14 and decide whether to constitutionally enshrine what they call a ‘voice to parliament’ for Indigenous people.

The accusation of racism is rife for anyone who dares to state that they are voting no, despite the rational concerns that many in the Australian public have with such a massive change.

One of the many concerns I have about this whole debate is the way in which Albanese Labor government is using this as a diversionary tactic.

Whilst the airwaves are clogged with discussions about a voice to parliament, it leaves a void of in the place of serious policy discussion.

When governments run out of ideas, and want to shift attention of the masses, a tried-and-true tactic is to flood mainstream media with even more meaningless trope then they usually do.

That’s what identity politics is… a diversion.

The reality is that people both here in Australia, and in the US, are struggling to put food on the table.

Many people can’t even afford to pay the rent or mortgage, let alone think about buying a home, given the outrageous prices that are now attached to small pieces of land, and bricks and mortar.

Our manufacturing industry has been decimated, and whilst people are being told that wind and solar farms will solve all of our energy problems, the cost of powering our homes is skyrocketing.

What about the fact that war is brewing?

That transparency in government is at an all-time low?

That our freedom of speech is only an implied right? Why isn’t this being enshrined in the constitution?

By all means, have a conversation about history, equality and what it means to be Australian.

But, don’t let them get away with shifting attention off the things that matter.

Because the reality is, that we are a nation of people that care deeply about injustice and everyone wants to see Australia thrive.

We have every reason to deeply reflect on what is being proposed, and we have every right to oppose it if we choose.

The farmer, soldier, check-out-chick, teacher, and builder should have the same opportunity to make a life here, to build a home, have a family.

We have to focus on the things that matter.
