Now, onto today’s topic…
“Welcome to the future” reads an article on the World Economic Forum (WEF) website.
The future that is being envisioned is a future free of private car ownership, where the majority of commute is done through fleets of autonomous vehicles (which, as technocrats are wont to do, is given the acronym FAV).
The author of the article goes to great lengths to talk about the benefits of this new system; how it will help improve the environment, reduce traffic congestion, create added convenience, etc.
Many of the ‘benefits’ often cited for reducing car ownership could be more easily obtained through better city planning e.g. walkable neighbourhoods, and zoning laws not hostile to small businesses so people commute smaller distances for work/groceries.
Glossed over or neglected entirely are all the negative implications should such a situation become a reality.
What are these negatives? Read on to find out!
