This was achieved by being effectively the middleman governing European politics.
Rulers sought his blessing to make their action against an opponent feel legitimate and thus not incur as much of a penalty in relations with other European states.
In theory, the Papacy was supposed to be an unbiased and pious institution whose judgment was fair and just.
In reality, there were times when the holder of the Papacy was corrupt and riddled with greed, ever in search of an opportunity to further extend its power.
